Amanda Osman & Tom Porter
Congratulations to Amanda Osman and Tom Porter for successfully grading for their Ni-dan (2nd degree black belt) After a 3 hour training session they both had to perform basic moves, combinations, 3 kata's with Bunkia (applications of moves) and 2 formats of kumite (sparring). In front of the grading panel
Amanda who started training in Wado Ryu when she was 8 years. chosen kata was Jitte and Tom who started training 2011 when he was 6 years kata was Nijushiho.
Both have shown commitment in their training over the past 6 months
My Dad, Tony Hunns (Ni-Dan) was one of the Chief Instructors of the Isle of Wight Karate Association (previously known as Vectis Karate Kai) along with my godfather Ev McGrath (San- Dan), practising Wado Ryu Karate. Influenced by them both, I started off on my karate journey in 1990 when I was 8 years old. I graded up through the Wado Ryu system and on the 15th February 1998, I successfully graded for my Sho-Dan (1st) Black Belt. During my advanced years at the club, I used to help teach the juniors with Ev, and often took the higher junior kyu grades through their syllabus to prepare them for their gradings. We sadly closed our club in the early 2000’s. Dad, having practised martial arts since his late teens, was keen to keep practising after all his years of training. As there were no other Wado Ryu clubs on the Island, he found a Shotokan Karate club with Sensei Malc Bradley and Sensei Mick Lambert. Shotokan is similar to Wado Ryu, so this seemed like the perfect fit. Dad joined the club in 2004 and took me along to try it out not long after he did. Malc and Mick welcomed us to their dojo, and there started my time practising Shotokan Karate with Newport Shotokan Karate Club, which has been my karate home and family ever since. My training hasn’t been continuous. Starting a family meant that I didn’t train as much and unfortunately Dad passed away unexpectedly in 2012. I found it extremely hard to go without him as this was our thing to do together. My sister and I were honoured to be presented with my Dad’s Ni-Dan in Shotokan which SEKU awarded to him posthumously. When my daughter Jessica was old enough to start training, I couldn’t wait to get her started and it gave me more of an incentive to go when I wasn’t working in the evenings. Being a 3rd generation karateka, she has quickly come up through the Shotokan grades (although it would have been quicker if it wasn’t for covid!). I can’t write all of this and not mention the wonderful Sensei Malc Bradley. He had taught me so much since joining NSKC and I miss him terribly since his passing. He would often tease me about my hatred for Tekki Shodan! Mick has since taken on that Tekki baton! Since changing my job in 2022, I have been able to train more consistently, and I have hardly missed a training session since. I have loved getting back into it and even started going to the SEKU weekend Instructor, Brown/Black and All Grade courses. My favourite thing to do is to practise kata. I enjoy nothing more than a full training session of katas (Tekki excluded!). I love the individuality of it, it tells a story, and it puts together in sequences all of those skills you learn in basics. In September 2023, Sensei Mick asked me to consider grading for my Ni-Dan. ‘G-Day’ was the 24th March 2024. I put my heart and soul into my training and grading, and whatever the outcome would be, just getting me there to do the grading was an achievement in itself. It was of course an even bigger achievement to be successful. I cannot thank Sensei’s Mick, Andy, Malc J and Simon enough for their patience, encouragement and determination to get me through it. So now, I wear my Ni-Dan grade with pride and in honour of my Dad and Sensei Malc Bradley. For me, karate has always been a way of life from a young age. No matter how hard I find it at times to go, or feel like giving up, I always feel heaps better after a good training session and I always come away with something new. The learning never stops, no matter what grade you are. Karate is a journey that never ends, and regardless of age or ability, there is always something new to learn and improve on.I look forward to new challenges as I further my knowledge and experience, and who knows, maybe a San-Dan grade in the future!
I Started training when I was 6 in January of 2011 at the fitness factory under Sensei Mark Elliott alongside my brother Sam, who had already been training for two years prior to me joining. I Trained at the fitness factory for 4 years until July of 2015, where me and Sam then both moved to Newport Shotokan Karate Club as 1st Kyu’s. We both went on to obtain our Sho dans together on February 7th 2016 under the tuition of senseis Malc Bradley and Mick Lambert. Over the years at the Fitness Factory and in the earlier years of being at Newport, I also competed at a junior level in the SEKU competitions in Portsmouth, winning across multiple events over the years. Within my first stint of training at Newport, I also trained with Senseis Andy Shorkey, Malc Jupp and Rob Bollen on a Saturday morning at Unity Hall in Newport, of which were always very focused and beneficial sessions that complemented my usual training on a Tuesday and Thursday very well. I continued to train until 2020, when COVID hit and then took a 3 year break to focus on other sports and hobbies. I then returned to the club again in January 2023, and decided to commit to training for my ni-Dan over the year under the guidence and tutoring of Sensei Mick, Sensei Andy Shorkey, Sensei Malc Jupp and Sensei Simon Barnes. The shocking passing of Malc Bradley while I was away from the club was deeply saddening, and on returning I could definitely feel that a core part of the club was missing. Throughout the year training for my ni-Dan, I went into every session with the intensity and effort that I know sensei Malc would have expected and hopefully in achieving this grade it would have made him proud.
Congratulations to everyone that passed their grading. Also well done to Adam Niblet for being awarded the best grader award. Great effort from you all.

Fi & Connor
Congratulations to club members Fi Groves and Connor Taylor-Barnes for passing their Sho-Dan and Ni-Dan grading at a recent Shotokan of England Karate Union grading.
Fi who is 16 and started training at the club in 2018 is also a keen Sea Cadet and a competent sailor, has been appointed to become the Lord Lieutenant chief cadet.
Connor who 15 started his training in 2016 and graded for his Sho-Dan in 2022.has won numerous medals in many karate championships over the years, and also trains twice a week for Bembridge football team.
Both have said that the respect, discipline and physical fitness that they have learnt from training at Newport Shotokan Karate Club have contributed to their other interests.
They are both committed and dedicated to their marital arts and are looking forward to continuing their journey at the club.
Sensei Malc Bradley would have been proud of you both.
Fi joined Newport IOW Shotokan Karate Club in 2018 aged ten, with a green belt, having attended a previous club since age 7, but had to relearn different techniques here, you are worked hard, but the results speak for themselves. She’s always been completely dedicated to her karate journey, and thoroughly enjoys her regular training with the club, and the respect, discipline and physical fitness that it produces, which integrates well with her lifestyle. Fi is a Sea Cadet at TS Osborne in Cowes since 2021, where she enjoys sailing, kayaking, and teaching Meteorology, she is one of only 6 cadets in the country to pass her Advanced Meteorology course and hopes to pursue a career in this. She was also invited to His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight Awards on 01/10/24, where she was appointed to become His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant Sea Cadet, one of the highest achievements in the Cadet Force. Fi is also a keen sailor and member of Yarmouth Sailing Club; she rigs and sails club boats solo on both the River Yar and Solent under the watchful eye of experienced members and has run a meteorology lesson here too. Her karate discipline, focus, mindset and fitness is a massive advantage in this type of environment. She has also competed in the ASTO small ships race as crew in Cowes for the last 4 years and has just finished a 9-day voyage around the southern UK coast with Morning Star Trust as part of a crew of 8, gaining her Competent Crew qualification. Fi is home educated and has recently gained IGCSE qualifications in Latin and Geography, a B-TEC, also gaining her 1st IGCSE exam success aged just 14, in History. More exams are booked for next year. Gaining her black belt Sho dan recently is a huge achievement, which couldn’t have happened without the consistent training, support and dedication shown to her since she started back in 2018, and she’s looking forward to continuing that journey at the club.
Connor took Karate up in April 2016, he progress graded twice at the age of 7, and when he turned 8 he went back to the beginning and graded for his 9th kyu in the March of 2017 where he won his first trophy for best grader. He went through the ranks and by the December of 2019 he achieved his 1st kyu, he was 10 years old. Connor then had to wait 2 years before he was eligible to grade for his Shodan (black belt). Unfortunately, Covid hit and his grading was delayed, his next opportunity came but he had an accident and he broke his collar bone but on the 07/05/2022 he successfully passed and achieved his dream. In between time Connor competed in many competitions achieving gold medals, Silver medals, Bronze medals and many trophies. Now in 2024 after 2 and a half years later Connor was eligible to take his Ni Dan, so he was put through his paces and trained very hard until he was ready, at the same time Connor trains twice a week and plays every week for his football team Bembridge, so it shows the commitment he has put in. On the 19/10/2024 Connor successfully passed his Ni-Dan. He would like to catch his dad but that’s never going to happen. Connor only achieved this through his own commitment and that of the people around him, Sensei Mick Lambert, Sensei Andy and Sensei Malc. Also, Sensei Malc Bradley was a massive part of Connors Karate life.
