Club Grading & Memorial Course For Sensei Malc Bradley May 7th 2022
The course and grading was held in memory of Sensei Malcolm Bradley who was the chief instructor at the club for many years who sadly passed away in December 2021
Sensei's Mick Dewey & Brian Smith instructed on this special course. The class was well attended with over 35 members training.The black/brown classes were kata Nijushiho with bunkai and kicking techniques. The kyu grade classes were Punching combinations, Heian Katas, and kyu grading techniques. After the presentation students were graded by Sensei's Dewey & Smith and all passed.
Congratulations to everyone who graded especially ConnorTaylor-Barnes who successfully graded for his Junior Sho-Dan black belt, and Clayton Taylor-Barnes 6years old (Connors younger brother) entering his first grading and being presented with the best grader award.
Sensei Mick Dewey 8th dan Chairman and chief instructor of S.E.K.U was very impressed with the standard of the training and grading.
Sensei Malc’s Memorial Course May 7th 2022
On this course Sensei Mick presented Malc’s family (Carol, Emma & Nathan) with a cheque for £1000 raised from the proceeds of the course, grading and donations that will go towards research for Aortic diseases.(Aortic Centre Trust)
Sensei Dewey also presented them a posthumous 6th Dan grade and diploma for Sensei Malc’s over 45 years training in Shotokan karate.

Connor Taylor-Barnes
Sho-Dan Grading
Connor Taylor- Barnes has successfully graded for his junior Sho-Dan black belt on May 7th 2022 at a Newport Shotokan Karate club course and grading.
The course and grading was held in memory of Sensei Malcolm Bradley who was the chief instructor at the club who sadly passed away in December.
Sensei’s Mick Dewey 8th dan & Brian Smith 7th dan from the Shotokan of England Karate Union instructed on the course and graded the students.
Connor who is 13years old and lives in Whitwell and attends the Bay secondary school and also plays football for Bembridge under 13s
After the 3 hours training Connor had to preform basic techniques,(punching, kicking, striking and blocking) and combinations of any techniques, 2 Katas (set moves) Jiyu- Ippon Kumite (semi-free fighting) and Jiyu Kumite (free fighting) against numerous opponents. In front of the grading panel.
Connor who first started Training in May 2016 and wanted to beat his dad Simon at achieving his junior black belt at the age of 12 years 11 months. But due to the pandemic missed out on doing so.
Simon was one of the first juniors to achieve his black belt under the tuition of Sensei Malc Bradley and sadly Connor was his last.
Connor is the reigning S.E.K.U junior champion at Kata (set moves) and 3 step (pre arrange fighting). And has a cabinet of trophies for the under ten category.
Also congratulations to all the other club students that graded and passed their respective kyu gradings. Especially Clayton Taylor-Barnes 6years old (Connors younger brother) entering his first grading and being presented with the best grader award.
​Congratulations to Sensei Mick Lambert for being awarded his Go-Dan at a recent club course and grading by Sensei Mick Dewey chief instructor and chairman of the Shotokan of England karate union. Mick first graded in 1974 and after a five year break he return to training at Newport IOW Shotokan Karate club. In March 1993 after achieving his Sho-Dan Mick became an assistant instructor at the club. After the sad loss of the clubs chief instructor Sensei Malc Bradley Mick has now taken over this roll and will continue to run the club in the same way that Sensei Malc would have done. So his legacy will continue

Sensei Mick presented Connor Taylor-Barnes & Dan Moss their Sho-dan diploma's. Dan who graded in March 2020 and Connor in May 2022. Both have shown commitment and dedication to achieve this grade.
Steve Allen who used to run the club back in the seventies visited us when he was on the island. Steve was a second dan and ran the club when it was up Carisbrooke High school. Steve and his wife who also trained and was a 1st dan emigrant to New Zealand and started their own dojo.
He was good friends with Sensei Chris Dowden and we meet up for a couple of drinks.
Sensei Aidan Trimble
September 17th
Sensei's Mick, Andy, Malc, Rob & Simon traveled to the mainland for a course with Sensei Aidan Trimble 8th dan. We went trough kata Gankaku, Jiyu-Ippon kumite and kicking drills.
Sensei's Mick & Andy went along to a course with Sensei Matt Powell. Kata Unsu with Bunkai, self-defence &kicking drills. Really enjoyable course.
Congratulations to everyone that graded also well done to Tilly Dowden for being awarded the best graded on the day. Sensei Brian Smith 7th dan took the training & grading and was well impressed with the training & grading.
Four Dan grade members from the club traveled to Portsmouth Pete Halsey, Mick Lambert, Simon Barnes & Andy Shorkey for a SEKU Instructors Class. The main session was taken by Sensei Brian Smith Center.
Congratulations to Sensei Simon Barnes for successfully passing his San-Dan grading
Sensei's Mick & Andy traveled with Simon to Lovedean karate club for a SEKU dan grading & training course. After a 2 hour's of training Simon had to perform basic combinations, two kata's, Kaeshi ippon kumite & jiyu kumite in front of the grading panel.
SEKU Black & Brown belt course at Portsmouth. Five members of the club Sensei's Mick, Simon also Brian Roberts, Fi Groves and Connor Taylor-Barnes. This was the first time that Brian & Fi have been on one of these courses. These course are important as they are part of the dan grade syllabus.
All Grade Course And Junior Comp
December 9th
Congratulations to Fi Groves, Connor Mitchell, Redford Bonnor, Connor & Clayton Taylor Barnes for winning awards at the SEKU annual junior competition. After a two hour all grade training session they entered Kata & San-bon 3 step kumite and they all performed extremely well being that it was the first competition that Fi, Redford, Connor Mitchell and Clayton had entered.
