The Clubs Latest Nidan February 10th 2019

Newport Shotokan Karate club member Simon Barnes successfully graded for his 2nd degree black belt (Nidan) at a recent Shotokan of England karate Union grading. Simon who first started training at the club in 1979 when he was 9 years old, and graded for his 1st dan in 1983 when he was 12, at that time he was one of the youngest in SEKU to achieve that grade. He left karate at the age of 15 and made a few comebacks in the mid to late 1990 s. In May 2016 when his son Connor wanted to start training Simon re-started his training and nearly 3 years later he graded again just short of 36 years between his two black belt gradings.

Congratulations to all club members that passed their grading today with Sensei Mick Dewey. Also well done to Lola Dowden for being awarded the best grader on the day award.

Excellent results at the Shotokan of England Karate Union annual championships on Saturday (April 6th) Newport IOW Shotokan club members Andy Shorkey, Malc Jupp and Connor Barnes entered into various categories. Connor who has just turn ten was the youngest to enter both of his events the 10years to 15years junior individual Kata (set moves) and the 10years to 15years junior under 5 foot Kumite (fighting) coming First in the Kata and second in the kumite. Andy and Malc both entered the adult individual kumite and after winning some hard fought rounds against some previous champions they met in the final with Andy taking the gold with an ippon (full point) They then teamed up with Norman Benn from the Uxbridge karate club and came first in the team kumite winning the prestige team shield. Andy was also presented with the most spirited fighter of the day award.

Club  Grading July 16th 2019

Congratulations to all club members that passed their grading today with Sensei Mick Dewey. Also well done to Ellie-May Bradley for being awarded the best grader on the day award. Ellie has won this award three times so she will now keep the trophy. 

Congratulations to club members that graded yesterday. Also well done to Jamin Blacklock for receiving the best grader on the day award.

The Dave Meyrick annual junior award, and the Tony Hunns annual adult award was presented to 

Fi Groves and Simon Barnes respectively.

Fi who has shown commitment in her training and very rarely misses a training session. Simon was awarded the adult award for achieving his Nidan in March

The awards are presented in memory of Sensei’s Tony Hunns and Dave Meyrick who were both long time members of the club and sadly passed away in July 2012.They were both presented by Jane Hunns, Amanda Osman Tony's wife and daughter also grandaughters Jessica & Elisha.
