Sensei Mick Lambert 4th Dan Grading January 15th 2017

Congratulations to Newport Karate Club Instructor Mick Lambert who successfully graded for his Yon-Dan (4th Dan) at the SEKU Instructor Class on January 15th 2017. Mick first started training at the club in April 1974 and took his first grading on July 14th 1974.  Mick returned to the club in 1979 and has been instructing at the club since 1981. After the grading the SEKU Senior Instructors congratulate him on his well deserved award.

S.E.K.U Black/Brown Belt Course February

The first event of 2017 was the S.E.K.U black/brown course held at Medina leisure centre Newport Isle Of Wight. The course content was basics, kata Bassai-Dai and competition point Scoring.

Twelve members fro the club attended Sensei's Mick & Malc, Nick Tyrell, Dan Moss, Andy Jones, Oliver & Elliot Paynter-Jones, Cory Swinfield, Jenson & Rocco Walsh,  and James King.

The club held the first grading of 2017 Sensei Mick Dewey was the grading examiner. The training consisted of basics, kumite and kata. Sensei's Malc & Mick would like to congratulate the 22 students that graded and passed. And also to Chloe Cowans for winning the trophy for best junior grader and Dan Moss for winning the best adult grader on the day.

Chris Carr Training  29th & 30th July

Another quality well thought out weekend training course with Sensei Chris Carr. Old school practically karate. Looking forward to next year. Thanks to Matt Smith and members of the Bembridge Karate club that also trained.

Club Grading Sunday 05th November 2017

Congratulations to all club members that passed their grading today with Sensei Mick Dewey. Also well done to Connor Barnes for being awarded the best grader on the day award.
The Dave Meyrick annual junior award, and the Tony Hunns annual adult award was presented to 
Connor Barnes and Sensei Mick Lambert respectively.
Connor who is eight has shown commitment in his training by attending the most sessions this year and also for his performances in the S.E.K.U championships in March.
Sensei Mick was awarded the adult award for his long term involvement with the club and also for successfully grading for his Yon-dan earlier this year.
The awards are presented in memory of Sensei’s Tony Hunns and Dave Meyrick who were both long time members of the club and sadly passed away in July 2012. They are presented annually by Tony and Dave's families.

SEKU Annual Championships
47th Portsmouth Open

S.E.K.U Annual Championships 

This years SEKU annual competition returned to its roots to the Portsmouth Academy after thirty five years away at the Mountbatten centre. Five club members entered in various categories.  

Cory Swinfield, Jenson Walsh & Rocco Walsh entered the junior team kata, Junior black/brown belt Kata & over 5’ San-Bon Kumite (3 step fighting) Cory also entered the over 5’ Kumite.

Simon Barnes entered the adult Dan grade Kumite. This was Simons first competition as an adult after a break in training of 31 years. Connor Barnes entered the pee-wee (under 10 years) Kata & San-bon Kumite. All members perform extremely well going through a number of rounds especially Connor who won both of his categories and was also awarded the Biff Thompson Memorial Trophy (for Spirit).

 

Portsmouth 47th Open Championships

Well done to the Six club members that entered the 47th Portsmouth open championships. Andy Shorkey, Dan Moss, Jenson Walsh, Rocco Walsh, Connor Barnes and Oliver Scobbie. This was Dans and Oliver's first time entering a competition and was a great experience for them both. Special thanks to Aaron Periera from Lovedean karate club for making up the third man for the adult team Kumite.
